About This Design — Kalo & Ulu

In Hawaiian tradition, the kalo — taro — is the elder sibling of the Hawaiian people. Born from the union of Wākea, the sky father, it became the plant that fed the ʻohana for generations, grown in the sacred loʻi, pounded into poi, shared at the table as both food and prayer. The ulu — breadfruit — grew freely and generously, feeding families through seasons of abundance and hardship alike. These plants did not just sustain bodies — they sustained culture, identity, and the Hawaiian way of life. This design honors them as the symbols they truly are.
