About This Design — Pua Melia (Plumeria)
The plumeria — pua melia in Hawaiian — is the scent of the islands. Strung into lei, worn behind the ear, floated in water bowls, given as a greeting and a farewell — this flower has marked every important moment of Hawaiian life for generations. Queen Liliʻuokalani chose the crownflower, pua pilo, as her symbol. King Kalākaua was celebrated with lei of every island bloom.
